Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Names Ron Kauffman Public Information Officer

Robert L. McFalls, CEO of the Area Agency on Aging has named local talk radio host, Ron Kauffman to be the Agency's first Public Information Officer. The appointment is effective immediately, and Mr. Kauffman will report directly to Mr. McFalls.

Ron Kauffman is the well-known live talk radio-show host of Senior LifeStyles that has been on-air for the past two-years on Clear Channel's AM 1230 WBZT throughout south Florida. His service to the senior community through his educational radio program is one of the key factors that attracted the Agency to consider Ron for this position.

Mr. Kauffman has been working with seniors in the community for the past five years. He began his relationship with the Area Agency on Aging in 2004 by inviting CEO, Bob McFalls, to appear on his talk show as a guest. He began volunteering with the AAA, and according to Mr. McFalls, "It quickly became apparent that Ron was someone whose talents and energy could benefit us in the area of marketing and publicity. We are very pleased to welcome him to our team and expect great things from him in the months ahead."

Ron will continue his three-times per week talk show program, Tuesday through Thursday on WBZT, but McFalls wasted no time in putting him to work. Ron was asked to make a key presentation on behalf of the Area Agency at the recent White House Conference on Aging held at the Cohen Pavilion on September 12. He also managed the press conference that followed with Committee Chair Dorcas Hardy, Florida Secretary of the Department of Elder ffairs, Carole Green, Area Agency CEO Robert McFalls and Congressman E. Clay Shaw. They discussed with the media the importance of the Area Agency's role to the national White House Conference on Aging's final meeting to be held in Washington in December.

Mr. Kauffman and his wife, Lisa, a geriatric care manager, have been Florida residents since 1995. They live in Abacoa in Jupiter and are both active in their homeowner's association. Ron serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Jewish Family & Children's Service in West Palm Beach. He also works with and assists the efforts of the Alzheimer's Association, while his wife is a committee volunteer at Alzheimer's Community Care. Mr. Kauffman attended C.W. Post College/Long Island University and St. John's University Graduate School of Business and is a Vietnam-era veteran.

Radio show features Alpert Jewish Family & Children's Service

Ron Kauffman is both a radio host and the newest board member of the Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family & Children's Service (Alpert JFCS). Now, his dual careers allow him to use his broadcast pulpit to announce the services of the non-profit, social service agency. Kauffman hosts the hour-long talk show "Senior Lifestyles" at 3:00 p.m. on WBZT 1230 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. He has hosted the show since January 2004.

"Once I sat in on some meetings at JFCS and saw all the wonderful programs they provide to seniors, I knew the agency's experts would be a gold mine for my show," Kauffman said. He interviewed Dr. Jacqueline Pevny, a geriatric psychiatrist - a profession that is rare in the region, despite the tremendous growth of in older citizens - and Eva Weiss, who helps Holocaust survivors."

We've discussed everything from how seniors should talk to their adult children, the 'hidden' adults in their 40s and 50s who have special needs and must be looked after and how to slow down the onset of Alzheimer's Disease," Kauffman said. "Alpert JFCS staff have also told my audience about having companions visit seniors every so often so they stay in their own homes and be as independent as possible."

The Abacoa resident worked for Levitz Furniture before leaving in the mid-1980s to learn about computers. He also wrote a book on automating sales forces. In addition to the

Kauffman and his wifed moved to Florida in 1996 to be. closer to both their mothers. When he was downsized out of a technology sales job, he decided to focus on the next big trend: seniors. "I asked where is the world going and the world is going gray," he said. .

Kauffman will be interviewing more Alpert JFCS experts on topics such as healthy aging, facts and myths about dementia and memory loss, combating depressioQ among seniors, and avoiding fraudulent schemes.

"We're going to discuss any health issues, financial needs, technological changes," Kauffman said. "At some point we'll talk about how to deal with the loss of a spouse and how sBniors' lives can change socially. Aging isn't as simple and onedimensional as people have made it out to be."~
